Tassie Taekwondo Players clean up at the Nationals
Taekwondo Tasmania travelled to Sydney over the weekend to compete at the 2008 Taekwondo Australia National Championships held at Olympic Park. The event was the biggest martial arts competition held in Australia with 1642 competitors from around Australia entered in the three day event. Taekwondo Tasmania contested a small team as part of its National campaign this year taking just 11 competitors competing in both the sparring and technical disciplines of the event and brining home 9 medals – 4 gold, 3 silver and two bronze. A monumental result for a small team at a very large competition. State Team Manager, Hugh Eagling was delighted with the performance of athletes from the state. It proves that Tasmania can produce quality athletes at all levels of the sport the younger athletes producing results that will take them toward National selection and on to International competition in the next few seasons. Tassie fielded a number of veteran athletes this year also doing well and bringing home medals to prove that Taekwondo is a versatile sport for all ages, with all veterans brining home medals to satisfy the never ending desire of competitive athletes hold dear.

2008 Tas Open Report
The 2008 Tasmanian Taekwondo team has been selected following the Tasmanian Open Taekwondo Championships held at the Aurora Sports Stadium on Sunday July 20. The team will represent Tasmania at the upcoming Australian Championships to be held in Sydney from the 3rd to the 5th of September.
The Tasmanian Championships attracted 102 competitors, a record number of participants who came from all parts of Tasmania, as well as from Victoria, South Australia and NSW.
The standard of competition was very high with the local exponents winning a good share of the 37 gold medals contested on the day. To cope with the high number of competitors, extra officials were brought in from interstate to cater to the demand. Competition included sparring, poomse and breaking events. A stand out performance was by Prue Evans from Hobart who dominated the 14-17 year old female 59-63 kg black belt sparring event to win the gold by defeating Tayla Rae Brown from Victoria who was an Australian Representative at the recent Junior World Championships.
The Tasmanian team is made up of experienced performers as well as talented youngsters. They are: Brandon Servant, Ty Dobie, Jack Sowter, Brett Hunt, Sally Bound, Dana Cleary, Prue Evans, Danielle Kannegiesser and Rachel Ridler. The coaching staff to accompany the team are: Andrew Evans, Grant Chilcott, Scott Cleary, Hugh Eagling and Daniel Gledhill.
State High Performance Training Day
Taekwondo Australia Tasmania Inc. ran a training day for competition. The annual get together at Clarence was a success yet again. Eagling's Taekwondo and Howrah Taekwondo from the South were joined by members from Taekwondo Plus (TKD +) in the North, to train together for Technical and Sparring competition. The friendly atmosphere makes it easy for practitioners of all levels to come and enhance their skills for competition, and the event was well attended for both technical and sparring players.
Sparring:
The day began for Seniors with quick 30 second rounds in the ring with a Centre Referee and four corner judges. This gave everyone an opportunity to get the guards on and have a go, even some of the Technical players donned a guard. Junior players did technique exercises in the morning and in the afternoon, got to have some sparring time in the ring.
Technical members got specific training in the afternoon while the Senior Sparring members got some more, longer bouts in the ring. These kinds of meetings exemplify the Taekwondo approach. The aim of the day is to improve player’s skills across a wide range of areas by upping the anti and putting them in new, more serious and difficult situations. but it does this without losing the sense of fun and friendship and the ultimate goal of personal development. Some of Eagling's Taekwondo and Howrah Taekwondo players got into the ring for the first time and enjoyed the experience immensely, such as Gary Lunson, who despite his fairly recent start to tournament sparring ended the day with a big smile on his face. More experienced players also identified a number of areas to improve on and all enjoyed the opportunity to spar with new opponents from other clubs.
Thanks go to the State Division for organising such a wonderful event and all Coaches and Referees that gave up their time to offer help and advice to all attendees which made this event so successful.
Namely:
Mr. & Mrs. Evans and family and all the members from Howrah Taekwondo.
Ray Jones for coming down from up North to organise the Referee's.
Mr. & Mrs. Eagling, Mr. Redgrove, Mr. Gledhill, Ms McMullen, Mr. Brown, Mr. Chilcott, & Ms Bound

............................................................................................................................................ 2007 Nationals Report
For 2007 our tournament program ran at the highest level for the duration of the year and our players put in 100% all year which culiminated with this event with the entire team fit and ready for action. Everyone was excited and nervous when taking the floor. Our results reflected the effort put in throughout the year with all team members performing well and achieving their goals for the competition.
A stand out performance from Jack Sowter (Eagling's Taekwondo) in his first competition in Black Belt division was a delight to watch. Jack has matured as a fighter over the course of the year. Jack didn’t make it through but his performance was brilliant in a hard fought game that showed Jack to be a player with great potential for the future. Prue Evans (Howrah Taekwondo) fought well to secure a silver medal in the Black Female Age 14-17 / 55-59.
Nick Boag (Warrens Taekwondo) secured a gold medal in the Poomsae: Individual Black 2nd Dan 41 - 50. Nikky White (Eagling's Taekwondo) also performed well in technical delivering a three way tie in her competition. The results went down to marks for presentation leaving Nikky with a bronze medal. Nikky also showing her potential for success at future competitions
